Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to the most common questions about our GP practice, services, and how to access care.

How do I register as a new patient?

You can register as a new patient by completing our registration form online or visiting our reception desk during opening hours. You will need to bring valid photo identification and proof of address. Registration is open to anyone living within our practice catchment area. There is no charge to register with an NHS GP practice.

What are your opening hours?

We are open Monday to Friday from 8:00am to 6:30pm. The practice is closed on weekends and bank holidays. For urgent out-of-hours medical advice, please call NHS 111 or visit your nearest A&E department in an emergency.

How do I book an appointment?

Appointments can be booked by calling our reception team from 8:00am, using our online consultation form, or visiting our reception desk in person. We offer same-day urgent appointments, routine appointments, and telephone consultations. Lines are busiest between 8:00 and 9:30am, so try calling after 10:00am for routine queries.

Can I order repeat prescriptions online?

Yes. Repeat prescriptions can be ordered online through our website, via the NHS App, or by dropping your repeat slip at reception. Please allow 48 working hours for prescriptions to be processed. Prescriptions can be sent electronically to your nominated pharmacy via the Electronic Prescription Service.

How do I get referred to a specialist?

Your GP will arrange a referral if they believe you need specialist assessment or treatment. Referrals are made electronically through the NHS e-Referral Service, which allows you to choose your hospital and appointment time. Urgent and two-week-wait cancer referrals are processed immediately.

Do you offer private GP appointments?

Yes, we offer private GP consultations alongside our NHS services. Private appointments may offer shorter waiting times and extended consultation lengths. Please contact our reception team for availability and fees.

What vaccinations do you offer?

We provide a full range of NHS vaccinations including childhood immunisations, flu vaccinations, pneumococcal vaccine, shingles vaccine, and travel vaccinations. Some travel vaccinations may attract a private charge. Please book a travel consultation at least 6 weeks before your trip.

How do I access my medical records?

You can access your medical records through the NHS App or by submitting a Subject Access Request to our practice. The NHS App allows you to view your GP health record, test results, and medications online. There is no charge for accessing your own records.

What should I do in a medical emergency?

In a medical emergency, call 999 or go directly to your nearest Accident & Emergency department. Do not wait for a GP appointment if you believe someone is having a heart attack, stroke, severe allergic reaction, or serious injury. For urgent but non-emergency concerns, call NHS 111.

Do you offer home visits?

Home visits are available for patients who are too unwell or physically unable to attend the surgery. Please call the practice before 10:30am to request a home visit. Our clinical team will assess whether a home visit is appropriate or if an alternative such as a telephone consultation may be more suitable.

How do I make a complaint or provide feedback?

We welcome feedback to help improve our services. Compliments and complaints can be submitted in writing to our Practice Manager, via email, or using the NHS Choices feedback platform. We follow the NHS complaints procedure and aim to acknowledge complaints within 3 working days and provide a full response within 25 working days.

Is the practice CQC registered?

Yes. Ashgrove Medical Practice is registered with and regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The CQC inspects GP practices against five key questions: Is the service safe, effective, caring, responsive, and well-led? Our latest inspection details can be found on the CQC website.
